Living Things / Dead Things

I found the remains of a seal on a beach...

And the well-preserved skull of an elk on the side of a barn...

The seals were a bit loud at times, when living, so I suppose that I prefer them dead. The Elk were pretty massive up close though...

This guy stuck his tongue out at me when I whistled at him. I decided not to bludgeon them to death with a flashlight because they looked as if they may have been a bit 'gamey' and, therefore, not so good to eat.

I also couldn't help but notice that the Elk were about the size of the van that we were traveling in, and quite spritely. It's best that I wasn't gorged by a set of antlers and left for dead in Northern California.

While the wild elk, a beautiful and delicious animal, is quite docile in its natural habitat, my own sense of self preservation won out and they escaped without me tasting and / or attempting to ride one of them. I made me decision and I stand by it.

So we carried onwards and upwards. All the while blaring the thom yorke record in parts, the tortoise / bonnie prince billy record in others. I bought 'where you been' at amoeba before I left. It had been ages since I'd heard it. It's really one of my favorite records.

This was a great foggy beach that we stopped at after grocery shopping. I ate cheese and salami on top of the big rock in the rain.

A note on the nature of 'roughing it' in 'the wilderness' without certain 'creature comforts.' Our shopping list included, but was not limited to, the following.

1 X Watermelon
1 X Gallon Fresh-squeezed Odwalla Orange Juice
1 X Veuve Clicquot Champagne
24 X Fat Tire Ale

1/2 lb Swiss Gruyere Cheese
1/4 lb Vermont Cheddar Cheese
1 X Italian Salami
1 X French Baguette
2 X Filet Mignon Steaks

2 X Greek yoghurt
1 X Fresh Artichoke

Fresh Broccoli, Peas and Carrots
1 X Butternut Squash Soup
6 X Eggs
2 X Ghiradelli Chocolate Bars
1 X Bag of Campfire marshmallows (many of which met a rather tragic end)

1 X Box Cinnamon Graham crackers
1 X Bag Pepperige Farm Oatmeal raisin Cookies

It was a little exercise in what I like to call 'gourmet camping.'
